revived by a smidge of sugar-water
left close to its head

on an ear spoon,
by a very small hand,

whose owner,
sitting under the kitchen table,
read the RSPB leaflet

that fell from the sunday newspaper
the adults were reading.

Seth Crook taught philosophy at universities in the US for a number of years, largely in the philosophy of mind and the theory of knowledge. He moved to the Isle of Mull and became devoted to poetry.
